After 25 years of heading up Sony Pictures, film exec Doug Belgrad has started up his own production company called 2.0 Entertainment. The new venture is less than a year old, but Belgrad has already gotten started with minority stakes in some big Sony productions, including perennial favorite Bad Boys 3, a Charlie’s Angels reboot, Mulan, Zombieland 2, Peter Rabbit, and Mallory. In addition to the film projects Belgrad is financing, he has a number of television series in the works, including a new sitcom by Jake Kasdan.

Belgrad has already recruited Open Road alum Sophie Cassidy, who was senior VP at her former production company. 2.0 Entertainment will start out by mostly investing in minority stakes in existing Sony projects and will split 50/50 on projects that Belgrade brings. Sony is betting on Belgrad’s ability to get people on board with profitable mid-budget productions like the ones that he has heleped get off the ground in the past, such as Hitch, American Gangster, and The Social Network.

Sony head Tom Rothman hopes that Entertainment 2.0 will become one of Sony’s main pipelines and helped to get the new outfit off the ground by recruiting Belgrad as a co-financier. Among the movies currently in production, Peter Rabbit begins shooting live-action sequences in early 2017, and Zombieland 2 is still in the early stages of development. Belgrad worked on the original Badboys, which helped to make Will Smith and Martin Lawrence household names, and the third installment of the franchise will begin shooting after Will Smith finishes shooting Bright.

In addition, it’s possible that Belgrad will be a producer on the Charlie’s Angels reboot that is in development, and he is set to co-produce Mulan. The new take on the ancient myth is an effort to make a foray into the growing Chinese film market by making a movie that has both worldwide appeal and will attract Chinese viewers.
